Oksana Tysovska has been taking photographs for around ten years. She likes to photograph people, to tell their stories. What she loves is when people like the way she sees them through the lens. And what she loves most of all when they come back for new photoshoots and it becomes a great tradition. Today she will share a few secrets of family photography:

Family photography is always about people, feelings, emotions and the main thing – about love. It’s very important to keep this in mind when you take family pictures. It’s not about beautiful clothes or beautiful poses. It’s about something that stays forever.

1. Preparation.

80% of the work has to be done at the stage of preparing for a photoshoot. Get ready to each photosession. Find out more about people you will be taking pictures of. Think about how you will tell their family story. Think about looks, locations, details – these are also your tools which you can use to realize the idea in the best possible way.

2. Practice!

No one will say anything new here – only practice and analysis will help you to develop and move forward. Always carry a camera with you and do not be too lazy to take pictures every day. Develop a habit of seeing the light and composition. Analyse what has been captured – what you have done good, what you have done bad and what you need to work on.

3. Inspiration.

It’s all around us! Watch out for people in their natural environment. Notice how they show their emotions and how they behave themselves. Think how you could capture this to tell their story. Of course, movies, books, music and pictures of other photographers will inspire you.

4. Have a good sleep before a photo session 🙂

If you take photos of little children, ask parents when they usually sleep and when they are in the best mood – the morning or the evening. This will help you to plan the photoshooting that way, at the time when the smallest participants are in a good mood, which this is extremely important!

5. Break.

Children get tired, they can quickly become bored of the photoshoot. Think ahead how you can attract their attention. Change the stages of shooting from active research to quiet exercises or static posing. Tell parents to take their favorite toy, book or sweets.

Bonus. “To carve in a stone”.

Even when you have managed to realize one of the best dynamic and reportage photosessions, it is necessarily to plan a few classic photos, “to be photo-framed”. You know, the ones grandparents will like, they can put it on the shelves or fireplaces. It will take you only a couple of minutes, but your customers will appreciate it!
